Infusion
The Infusion is all about producing a rich, complex baritone saxophone sound. It was designed for players who want warmth, fullness, clarity, and depth, while still having plenty of power and punch available when the music demands it.
Unlike many traditional Berg-style mouthpieces that naturally lean toward a rougher, gruffer sound, the Infusion starts from a place of richness and beauty. It delivers a full, resonant voice with excellent clarity and focus. If you want that aggressive edge, it’s there when you need it—but the mouthpiece doesn’t force you into that sound.
Crafted from premium German hard rubber bar stock, every Infusion is hand-finished by one of of the most respected craftsmen in the saxophone world: Brian Powell.
My goal was to create a mouthpiece that combines the warmth and lushness of the finest vintage Otto Links with the power and projection that players love from finest vintage Berg Larsens—without the limitations commonly associated with either design.
The result is a remarkably versatile mouthpiece capable of producing a wide range of baritone saxophone sounds. Whether your influences include Harry Carney, Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber, Gary Smulyan, Nick Brignola, or somewhere in between, the Infusion allows you to explore those tonal colors while still sounding like yourself.
This is not a mouthpiece that locks you into one specific sound concept.
Instead, it gives you the flexibility to move effortlessly from warm and lyrical to bold and commanding, making it a true workhorse for the serious baritone saxophonist.
Sound Concept
The Infusion was never intended to be an extreme “screamer” mouthpiece.
It was designed for players who place sound quality above sheer volume. While it offers excellent projection and plenty of punch, it never becomes thin, shrill, or excessively bright.
The resistance level was carefully balanced to sit comfortably between a traditional Otto Link and a Berg Larsen. There is enough resistance to provide stability, focus, and tonal depth, while still allowing the mouthpiece to respond freely throughout the entire range of the instrument.
If your goal is an ultra-free-blowing, high-baffle, maximum-volume mouthpiece, there are many excellent options available. That simply wasn’t the mission of the Infusion.
The mission was to create a versatile, professional-level mouthpiece that delivers a beautiful sound in virtually any musical setting.
Ligature Compatibility
One of the unique features of the Infusion is that it was designed with the same body diameter as my full-sized hard rubber tenor mouthpieces.
I have always felt that baritone players should have access to the same wide variety of ligature options that tenor players enjoy. Unfortunately, many baritone mouthpieces use unique body sizes that limit those choices.
Because of its dimensions, virtually any ligature designed for a full-size hard rubber tenor mouthpiece will fit the Infusion beautifully, including ligatures designed for 10MFAN tenor mouthpieces and traditional hard rubber Otto Link tenor mouthpieces.
The only ligature I generally do not recommend is the Vandoren Optimum, as it tends to run slightly small.
Design:
—A large chamber design
—Carefully balanced medium-height baffle
—Rich, warm tonal foundation
—Excellent projection without excessive brightness
—Outstanding flexibility across musical styles
—Tenor-sized body diameter for maximum ligature compatibility
Most importantly, the Infusion is a completely original design.
Its sound can best be described as combining the warmth and fullness often associated with great vintage Links and the power and authority many players appreciate in vintage Bergs. The design itself is not based on either mouthpiece— it simply captures the best qualities that players love from both worlds.
The result is a baritone mouthpiece with tremendous versatility, beautiful tone, and enough power for virtually any professional situation without sacrificing richness, depth, or musicality.
If you’re looking for one baritone mouthpiece that can cover an enormous range of musical situations while always keeping sound quality at the forefront, the Infusion was designed for you.
